“I’ve always had a deep connection with magnetic tape. Since the end of the ’80s, when I was just a kid, musical experimentation was inextricably linked to that medium, to the tapes that filled my days. Every recording, every edit, every sound etched onto those tapes represented my first naive steps into the world of music. It was a way to explore, to get to know myself and the sounds I could create.

Then, in the late ’90s, the introduction to Minidiscs and, later, HD recording changed everything. Daily interaction with tape seemed like a thing of the past, forgotten in favor of newer, more immediate, and versatile technologies. But that magic, that physicality, was hard to replace.

Over the years, I’ve watched with curiosity as magnetic tape made its return to the tables of ambient and experimental music creators. I realized that many had already rediscovered and embraced this medium, while for others, it had never really gone away. I, on the other hand, was much slower to return. But it was precisely through the works of other artists that I found the drive to immerse myself once again in this dimension, more convinced than ever.

Since 2020, after some attempts to incorporate tape elements into my compositions, I began to explore this path more seriously. I started creating tracks where the use of magnetic tape wasn’t just an accessory, but an expressive end in itself. “Magnetic Series” is not a concept album in the traditional sense, but rather a collection of tracks created between 2020 and 2024, united by a common thread: the manipulation of tape in various forms, from cassette loops to reel-to-reel, from slowed-down/speed-up tracks to entire mix passed through tape.

Beyond the allure of nostalgia and the fun that this medium provides, magnetic tape offers something unique: an intransigence that digital lacks. While digital allows you infinite possibilities, tape forces you to make definitive choices, pushing you into a creative process that permits no compromises. And perhaps it’s this very unyielding nature that makes it so fascinating and valuable.“

“Ho sempre avuto un legame profondo con il nastro magnetico. Sin dalla fine degli anni ’80, quando ero appena un ragazzo, la sperimentazione musicale era indissolubilmente legata a quel supporto, alle cassette che riempivano le mie giornate. Ogni registrazione, ogni modifica, ogni suono inciso su quei nastri rappresentava i miei primi ingenui passi nel mondo della musica. Era un modo di esplorare, di conoscere me stesso e i suoni che potevo creare.

Poi, nei tardi anni ’90, l’incontro con il Minidisc e, successivamente, con la registrazione su HD, ha cambiato tutto. Il contatto quotidiano con il nastro sembrava una cosa del passato, dimenticata in favore di nuove tecnologie più immediate e versatili. Ma quella magia, quella fisicità, erano difficili da rimpiazzare.

Negli anni ho osservato con curiosità il ritorno del nastro magnetico sui tavoli dei creatori di musica ambient e sperimentale. Mi sono reso conto che molti avevano già riscoperto e riabbracciato questo mezzo, mentre per altri non se n’era mai andato. Io, invece, mi sono mosso ben più tardi. Ma è stato proprio grazie ai lavori di altri artisti che ho ritrovato la spinta a immergermi di nuovo in questa dimensione, più convinto che mai.

Dal 2020, dopo alcuni tentativi di inserire parti elaborate su nastro nelle mie composizioni, ho iniziato a esplorare più seriamente questo percorso. Ho cominciato a creare brani in cui l’uso del nastro magnetico non era solo un elemento accessorio, ma un fine espressivo in sé. “Magnetic Series” non è un concept album nel senso tradizionale, ma piuttosto una raccolta di brani realizzati tra il 2020 e 2024 uniti da un filo conduttore: la manipolazione del nastro in varie forme, dai loop su musicassetta al reel2reel, dalle tracce rallentate/accelerate a mix interi passati su nastro.

Oltre al fascino della nostalgia e al divertimento che questo mezzo comporta, il nastro magnetico offre qualcosa di unico: un’intransigenza che il digitale non possiede. Mentre il digitale ti permette infinite possibilità, il nastro ti impone di fare delle scelte definitive, ti costringe a impegnarti in un processo creativo che non ammette compromessi. E forse è proprio questa sua natura implacabile che lo rende così affascinante e prezioso.”
